Certain items in your wardrobe are worth investing time and money into and a great coat is exactly that. It is the perfect investment piece due to its absolute timelessness and versatility. I personally love dressing down coats as part of a casual look, but they can be just as easily worn on top of a suit in winter. Below I showcase four of my favourite coats from two of my favourite brands.
The Japanese brand Uniqlo continues to deliver the goods with their seasonal collaboration with french designer Christopher Lemaire. This collab has been consistently amazing in producing oversized, contemporary fits while maintaining the incredible price-quality ratio Uniqlo has become renowned for.
This coat has a super relaxed, unstructured fit. With no padding through the shoulder and a roomy fit through the arms and body, it drapes effortlessly and allows you to add as many layers as you need underneath without feeling restricted in anyway.
I picked up this overcoat on sale before summer from the Uniqlo U A/W 17 collection and its turned out to be one of my favourites. Made out of Uniqlo’s waterproof, windproof ‘blocktech’ fabric, It’s my go to in testing weather conditions.
The past two A/W seasons I’ve been lucky enough to be gifted some pieces from Paul Smith. When choosing items from the PS website an overcoat was an obvious choice. They offer more classic fits that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
This season I chose a dark grey overcoat in a cashmere blend. This piece is without doubt the highest quality item of clothing I own. It has a wide notch lapel and a high button stance (3 buttons) lending itself to be dressed up easily. Since I wanted to dress it down, I sized up once to allow a roomier fit and the possibility wearing a chunky knit or hoodie underneath (as photoed above).
I was gifted this PS navy Epsom coat last year and I have gotten loads of wear out of it since then. I found it easy to wear because of it’s low button stance and lack of rigid shoulder padding. I didn’t size up in this one so its snug with a hoodie but perfect with a shirt or tee shirt.
